  • Latin name: Philodendron hebetatum
  • Danish names: Climbing philodendron
  • English names: - (unknown)

Philodendron hebetatum is an elegant and relatively rare philodendron species from the tropical rainforests of South America. It is especially known for its long, narrow, and arrow-shaped leaves, which give the plant a light, streamlined, and almost graphic appearance. Compared to many other Philodendron species, P. hebetatum appears more delicate and slender in its growth, yet remains distinctly tropical.

The leaves are entire, pointed, and dark green with a slight sheen. On young plants, the leaves are narrower and simpler, while older plants develop longer and wider leaves with a more prominent arrow shape. The plant is a pronounced climber that in nature grows up tree trunks using aerial roots, and it develops most beautifully when given support in the form of a moss pole, board, or branch.

Cultivation and requirements:

Philodendron hebetatum thrives best in a bright location without direct, harsh sun, but also tolerates light partial shade. It prefers:

  • Airy, well-drained soil, e.g., an aroid mix with bark, perlite, and coco coir
  • Even moisture during the growing season, without the roots sitting in water
  • Moderate to high humidity
  • Temperatures above 15 °C

The plant does not tolerate frost and is grown in Denmark as an indoor plant, in a conservatory, plant cabinet, or greenhouse. With good climbing support, it develops larger and more characteristic leaves.

Cultivation from seeds:

Sow the seeds in a light, moist, and well-drained seed-starting mix and cover them only very lightly. They germinate best at 22–28 °C and high humidity. Germination typically takes 2–6 weeks. Young plants grow quickly and begin to form aerial roots early on, which reach out for support.

Utility:

Philodendron hebetatum is grown exclusively as an ornamental plant and is particularly valued for its slender, elegant leaf appearance and its climbing growth habit. It is an obvious choice for collectors and those who want a philodendron with a lighter and more minimalist look than the classic large-leaved species.

Philodendron hebetatum is a stylish and refined tropical plant that fits perfectly into modern plant arrangements and adds a calm, yet exotic touch to indoor greenery.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-draining potting soil. We use our own Aroid mix for this plant.

- Place in bright, indirect light
- Keep moist, but the soil can dry out slightly between waterings
