Arisaema griffithii is one of the most spectacular cobra lilies and originates from the Himalayan region, where it grows in cool, humid mountain forests. It belongs to the aroid family (Araceae) and is related to both Amorphophallus and Dracunculus, but has a more refined and exotic appearance.
This species is particularly sought after by collectors for its dramatic flower shape and intense colors.
Appearance and flowering
Arisaema griffithii develops an impressive, hood-shaped spathe in deep purple, brownish, and almost black shades with striking, light stripes. The inner part can appear almost velvety, and the characteristic “cobra hood” gives the plant a dramatic and almost mysterious look.
The spadix is relatively short compared to, for example, Arisaema speciosum, which gives the flower a compact and powerful appearance. The plant typically grows 40–80 cm tall.
After flowering, palmately divided leaves are formed, and later in the season, the plant can develop dense clusters of bright red berries, which provide additional ornamental value in late summer.
Difference from other Arisaema species
Compared to Arisaema speciosum, A. griffithii lacks the long, tail-like spadix and appears more compact and robust. Compared to Arisaema concinnum, the colors are often deeper and more intense, which makes it one of the most decorative species in the genus.
Cultivation and care
- Light: Partial shade to bright woodland shade.
- Temperature: Hardy in Denmark in a well-drained location with winter cover.
- Soil: Humus-rich, well-drained, and slightly moist soil – preferably mixed with leaf compost.
- Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season. Avoid waterlogged soil in winter.
- Overwintering: Can overwinter in the garden in well-drained soil. In very cold or wet winters, a layer of leaves or spruce branches can protect the tuber.
- Fertilizer: Mild, organic fertilizer in the spring supports vigorous growth.
Use in the garden
Arisaema griffithii is ideal for woodland gardens, shade beds, and exotic plantings. It pairs beautifully with ferns, hostas, and other woodland plants, creating a dramatic, botanical focal point in the garden.
Arisaema griffithii is an elegant and intense cobra lily with a strong character – a perfect tuberous plant for collectors and gardeners who want something truly special in the shade garden.
