VERY RARE
- Latin name: Arisaema speciosum
- Danish names: Kobralilje, arisaema
- English names: Cobra lily, Himalayan cobra lily

Arisaema speciosum is a spectacular and exotic tuberous plant from the Himalayan region, where it grows in moist, forested mountain areas. It belongs to the aroid family (Araceae) – the same family as Amorphophallus and Dracunculus – but has a more elegant and slender appearance.
This species is particularly prized among collectors for its dramatic flower shape and tropical look, while also being surprisingly hardy in temperate gardens.
Appearance and flowering
Arisaema speciosum develops a characteristic inflorescence with a curved, dark purple to reddish spathe with light stripes and a long, elegant "tail" (extended spadix) that can hang down dramatically. The flower has an almost sculptural quality and resembles a cobra's hood – hence the name cobra lily.
After flowering, decorative, palmately divided leaves form on long stalks. The plant can reach 60–120 cm in height depending on growing conditions. Later in the season, clusters of red berries develop, adding further ornamental value.
Within the cobra lilies, there are also related species such as Arisaema concinnum, which has a more upright and compact floral appearance, and Arisaema griffithii, which is known for its deep, dark colors and more robust appearance. Together, these three species form an exciting spectrum of shapes and colors within the genus Arisaema.
Difference from other aroids
Unlike the more tropical Amorphophallus species, Arisaema speciosum is adapted to cooler mountain climates. It is therefore more suitable for outdoor cultivation in Denmark, as long as it is planted in well-drained soil and protected during the winter.
Cultivation and care
- Light: Thrives best in partial shade or bright woodland shade.
- Temperature: Hardy to light frost if the tuber is kept well-drained.
- Soil: Humus-rich, well-drained and slightly moist soil – preferably with leaf mold.
- Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season, but avoid standing water.
- Overwintering: In well-drained soil, the tuber can overwinter in the garden. In very cold or wet winters, lifting and storing in a dry place at 5–10 °C is recommended.
- Fertilizer: Apply a mild, organic fertilizer in the spring to support growth.
Use in the garden
Arisaema speciosum is ideal for woodland beds, shade gardens, and exotic plantings, where it creates a dramatic and botanically interesting look. It combines the tropical look of aroids with better cold tolerance, making it particularly attractive to Danish garden owners and collectors.
Arisaema speciosum is an elegant and distinctive tuberous plant that brings the mysticism of the Himalayas into the garden – perfect for those who love unusual and exotic plants with character.
