- Latin name: Darlingtonia californica
- Danish names: Kobralilje, kobra lilje, Californisk kandebærer
-
English names: California pitcher plant, cobra lily, cobra plant
This is an exciting and unique carnivorous plant native to Northern California. In appearance, it is somewhat reminiscent of common Sarracenia species, to which it is also related. However, the "pitcher" itself ends in a nodding head with a forked "fishtail." This appearance has also given the plant the name cobra lily, as it can resemble a cobra with its fangs.
In the wild, the cobra lily typically lives in nutrient-poor soil through which cold water flows. Here, it grows in full sun. In winter, it can survive frost. Like Sarracenia species, the "capture" of prey occurs when flies or other insects wander into the pitcher, where they fall in and are slowly dissolved.
Here in Denmark, it can be kept in an unheated greenhouse, provided the winter does not get too cold and the summer does not get too hot.
