Coconut coir is made from the outer husk of coconuts. It is a popular and excellent alternative to, among other things, peat. Coconut coir retains moisture well, while also having structure and drainage, so it does not become too wet. For this reason, coconut coir is included as a base in many of our specialty soils, just as we most often use it as the base soil in, among other things, our Unique terrariums and for our various terrarium animals.

- This coconut coir is ready for immediate use and does not need to be rehydrated or otherwise prepared first.

Why choose our coconut coir?

  • Organic and sustainable
  • Free from salts
  • Both water-absorbent and draining
  • Very good for plant propagation

Coconut coir vs. Peat

Coconut coir has many of the same properties as peat or sphagnum moss. However, peat is not very sustainable, as large amounts of greenhouse gases are released when peat is harvested. Coconut coir, conversely, is harvested as a byproduct and therefore has a very small climate impact. In fact, it ensures that a larger portion of the coconut is utilized.
