  • Latin name: Gasteria verrucosa
  • Danish names: Gasteria, warty gasteria, ox tongue (rarely used)
  • English names: Gasteria succulent, Ox tongue plant

Gasteria verrucosa is a decorative and easy-to-grow succulent from South Africa, known for its characteristic dark green leaves covered in small, white bumps ("warts"). It belongs to the same family as aloe (Asphodelaceae) and shares many of the same robust traits, but has a more compact and sculptural appearance.

Appearance and growth

The plant forms thick, elongated leaves that grow in pairs and often form a dense rosette or a slight spiral shape over time. The leaves are dark green with distinct white dots and a slightly rough surface, which gives the plant a very decorative and almost graphic look.

Gasteria verrucosa remains relatively compact and typically grows 15–25 cm tall. It propagates readily with offsets and can form small clumps over time. In good conditions, it can bloom with long flower stalks bearing small, tubular flowers in reddish and green shades.

Use

This species is ideal for windowsills, succulent collections, and small pots. It is also well-suited for dry terrariums and minimalist plant arrangements, where its structural appearance really shines.

Cultivation and care

  • Light: Thrives best in bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some direct sun, but avoid harsh midday sun.
  • Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 15–30 °C. Does not tolerate frost.
  • Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent soil with sand or gravel.
  • Watering: Water sparingly. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
  • Fertilizer: Use a mild organic cactus fertilizer during the growing season.
  • Overwintering: Keep in a bright and relatively dry spot at a minimum of approx. 10 °C.

Note

Gasteria verrucosa is an extremely undemanding and robust plant, suitable for both beginners and collectors. It requires minimal care but rewards you with a beautiful and characterful appearance all year round. Gasteria verrucosa is a stylish and hardy succulent that brings structure and tranquility to any plant collection – perfect for both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts.
