PRODUCES EDIBLE FRUIT
  • Latin name: Musa mannii
  • Danish names: Indisk dværgbanan
  • English names: Indian dwarf banana

The Indian dwarf banana originates from the Himalayan regions, but is unfortunately extremely rare in the wild. It is a dwarf banana that, with a maximum height of 1.5 meters, is well-suited for cultivation in pots. It also tolerates slightly lower temperatures than many other bananas. The pseudostem ("stem") is dark and the inflorescence is upright with pink/purple flowers. The fruits (bananas) are about 5 cm long and are said to be tasty.

Seed germination

Lightly scarify the seed with fine sandpaper or a nail file. Then, soak in warm water for 24 hours. Sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of damp paper towel, then seal in a plastic bag. Keep in a bright, warm location.

Please note that it can take up to 6 months for the seeds to germinate!

Childcare

Best grown in a pot, even though it can withstand slightly lower temperatures. Must still be brought indoors during the winter.

- Place in a bright spot, but can tolerate shade
- Prefers shelter from the wind
- Use good, nutrient-rich, and well-draining soil
- Keep moist
