Can tolerate light frost

  • Latin name: Aloe striata
  • Danish names: Koral aloe, koralaloe
  • English names: Coral aloe, stripe-leaf aloe

Aloe striata, also known as coral aloe, is an unusually elegant aloe species native to South Africa, where it grows in dry, rocky regions and on slopes. It distinguishes itself from many other aloe species by its smooth leaf margins and pastel-like coloration, making it an aesthetic favorite in drought-tolerant gardens and container plantings.

The plant forms a low, rosette-shaped growth with broad, smooth, blue-green to gray-green leaves, often with a pink or coral-pink tint – especially in full sun and under dry conditions. The leaves have no thorns, but are instead marked by a thin, coral-colored edge, which, along with the name striata ("striped"), refers to the fine lines and color nuances that run through the leaves.

From spring to early summer, Aloe striata blooms with up to 60 cm tall stalks bearing clusters of small, tubular flowers in warm coral-red to orange shades – a perfect color match for the subtle pink tones of the leaves. The flowers attract pollinating insects and birds.

The plant thrives best in full sun to light partial shade and requires well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant and well-suited for rock gardens, xeriscaping, and pots. Aloe striata can handle light frost – typically down to around -5 °C – especially if it is kept dry and sheltered. In cold regions, it should be grown in a pot and overwintered frost-free.

Utility:
Aloe striata is primarily used as an ornamental plant and is known for its high decorative value. It is popular in both modern and naturally inspired gardens, where its soft forms and colors provide a nice contrast to more aggressive, thorny succulents. Furthermore, it is easy to grow and propagates readily via offsets.

This species is ideal for those who want a gentle yet strong succulent with a harmonious appearance and high aesthetic value. Aloe striata is a refined and reliable classic in drought-tolerant plantings – and a must for anyone who appreciates discreet beauty with a tropical character.

Seed germination

Sow the seeds directly into moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a thin layer of sand. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of moist kitchen roll, which is then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright, warm location.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-draining potting soil, optionally mixed with a little sand or perlite.
