  • Latin name: Ficus scandens (quercifolia)
  • Danish names: Hængefigen, krybefigen, hjertebladsfigen, egebladet figen
  • English names: Creeping fig, climbing fig, terrarium fig, Oak leaf creeping fig

Note: Ficus scandens quercifolia is a rare and sought-after terrarium plant that is only occasionally offered for sale. As it grows slowly and is propagated sparingly, the supply is often limited – but in return, it is extremely durable and long-lived once it establishes itself. Therefore, these are smaller, but established plants.

Creeping fig (Ficus scandens quercifolia) is a compact, creeping fig species that is particularly well-suited for terrariums and vivariums. The plant is unfortunately rarely found on the market, but its decorative, small oak-leaf-like leaves and calm growth make it a true favorite among terrarium enthusiasts.

Appearance and growth

The plant forms dense carpets of small, green leaves that resemble small oak leaves. It grows slowly and in a controlled manner compared to many other Ficus species, making it ideal in terrariums where you want a stable, low-growing plant that does not take over the entire environment. Ficus scandens quercifolia readily attaches itself to backgrounds, roots, and rocks and can form beautiful, natural green surfaces.

Use

This species is perfect for tropical terrariums with high humidity, where it creates a natural and lush look. It is well-suited for terrariums with amphibians, geckos, anoles, snakes, and insects. Its small leaves and compact growth also make it ideal for nano- and biotope terrariums, where aesthetics and balance are important.

Cultivation and care

  • Light: Thrives best in moderate indirect lighting. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves.
  • Temperature: Ideally between 20–28 °C.
  • Humidity: High (70–90%) – perfect for humid terrariums.
  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged. Does not tolerate drying out.
  • Soil: Light, well-drained soil or moss mixture suitable for tropical plants.
  • Fertilizer: Fertilize very sparingly during the growing season – a weak solution once a month is enough.

Creeping fig is one of our absolute favorite plants for terrariums – a compact, decorative, and undemanding plant that brings structure and natural beauty into any environment without growing uncontrollably. Perfect for those who want a lush, green terrarium with minimal maintenance.
