  • Latin name: Aloe thraskii
  • Danish names: Coast aloe
  • English names: Coast aloe, Dune aloe

Aloe thraskii, also known as coast aloe, is an impressive and fast-growing aloe species native to the coastal regions of South Africa, where it grows naturally in sandy dunes and exposed, sunny slopes. It is particularly adapted to harsh, salt-laden winds and intense sun, making it a robust and reliable plant in hot and dry conditions.

Over time, the plant develops a tall, woody stem that can reach up to 2-3 meters in height, crowned by a dramatic rosette of long, arching leaves. The broad, grey-green leaves are stiff, curved upwards, and equipped with small, closely spaced spines along the edges. This architectural growth form makes Aloe thraskii a striking specimen plant in both gardens and pots.

From winter to early spring, the plant blooms with tall, branched inflorescences bearing dense, tubular flowers in vibrant shades of yellow and orange. The flowers are an important food source for sunbirds and insects, contributing to a rich life in the garden.

Coast aloe thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, and it is highly drought-tolerant. It can withstand brief frost down to around -3°C, especially if kept dry. In areas with harsher winters, it is recommended to grow it in large containers that can be overwintered in frost-free conditions.

Seed germination

Sow the seeds directly into moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a thin layer of sand. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between moist kitchen paper, which is then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with good, well-draining potting soil, optionally mixed with a little sand or perlite.

- Place in a bright spot, preferably in full sun
- Better too little than too much water
- Fertilize during the growing season with cactus fertilizer
- Tolerates drying out
- Does not tolerate hard frost. Can potentially overwinter in a greenhouse
