- Latin name: Drosera anglica
- Danish names: Langbladet soldug
- English names: English sundew, great sundew
Drosera anglica is a fascinating carnivorous plant that grows naturally in bogs and wetlands across large parts of the Northern Hemisphere, including Scandinavia. The species is known for its long, narrow leaves covered in glistening glandular hairs, which give the plant an almost dew-kissed appearance.
Small sticky droplets form on the leaves, attracting and trapping small insects. Once an insect is caught, the leaf gradually curls around the prey, after which the plant absorbs the nutrients. It is this trait that makes sundews one of the most popular groups of carnivorous plants.
Drosera anglica is often compared with the other two Danish species Drosera rotundifolia and Drosera intermedia. Where D. rotundifolia has small, almost round leaves, D. anglica develops long, narrow leaves with a more upright appearance. Compared to D. intermedia, D. anglica typically becomes larger and more robust, with longer leaves and a more pronounced growth habit.
Cultivation and requirements
Drosera anglica thrives best in full sun to a very bright location and prefers:
- nutrient-poor and acidic soil
- constantly moist soil
- high humidity
A classic carnivorous plant soil mix, e.g., nutrient-free peat and sand, is ideal. Regular potting soil or fertilizer should be avoided, as the plant is adapted to very nutrient-poor conditions.
It is best to water the plant with rainwater, demineralized water, or other low-lime water. The soil must never dry out completely.
Drosera anglica is relatively hardy and can in many cases be grown outdoors in Denmark in moist mini-bogs or cold frames, where it undergoes natural winter dormancy.
Cultivation from seed
Seeds of Drosera anglica are very small and are best sown on the surface of moist soil without being covered.
- sowing on moist peat or carnivorous plant soil
- bright location without strong, drying heat
- temperature of 18–24 °C
- high humidity during germination
Some seeds may benefit from a short cold period before sowing. Germination typically occurs within 2–8 weeks but can be irregular.
The young plants quickly develop their characteristic sticky carnivorous leaves.
Utility and collector's value
Drosera anglica is grown primarily as an ornamental and collector's plant. It is especially popular among carnivorous plant enthusiasts due to its elegant growth habit and natural adaptation to cooler climates.
For collectors of Nordic and temperate sundew species, it is an obvious supplement to both Drosera rotundifolia and Drosera intermedia.
Drosera anglica is an excellent choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow an elegant and hardy carnivorous plant entirely from seed—a fascinating species with glistening trapping leaves and high collector's value.
