- English names: Purple pomegranate, carthaginian apple, granada
The purple pomegranate, Punica granatum "purple fruit", is a dwarf variety that produces small, dark purple fruits. It is a rare and highly sought-after variety, and therefore still somewhat more expensive than, for example, the standard pomegranate.
The pomegranate is generally a small fruit-bearing tree or shrub that originates from modern-day Iran and northern India. However, it has been cultivated for centuries for its fruit and is therefore found spread across most of the world. The name pomegranate is believed to date back to Medieval Latin and refers to an apple (pōmum) with seeds (grānātum).
The growth is dense and shrub-like with thorny branches and green, almost glossy leaves. The flowers are large and red, and the fruits are characteristically round, usually red, and filled with crunchy red seeds/arils. The fruits are used especially in salads or juices, but can also easily be eaten raw with a spoon.
PLEASE NOTE: It can be a little slow to put out its first leaves in the spring. So even if the tree might look dead, you definitely shouldn't give up on it :)
