The Madagascar jewel plant originates, as the name suggests, from Madagascar. It belongs to the spurge family and can secrete a milky white sap that may cause skin irritation. In the wild, it can grow up to 1.5 meters tall. However, it does not grow nearly as tall when cultivated in pots. The plant has a relatively thick stem that is 4-5 sided and has small bristles. The leaves are large and fine green, and on young plants, they can have a white feathered pattern.
The small white flowers develop on the stem, and they are not always noticed as they are somewhat inconspicuous. Each flower forms a pair of small black seeds. The peculiar thing about this plant is that it "shoots" the seeds away to spread them as much as possible. The seeds can therefore often be found several meters away from the plant. Sometimes you can even hear when the seeds are shot off and hit something on their way.
- The seeds are very easy to germinate.
