  • Latin name: Passiflora incarnata
  • Danish names: Majpop, kødlig passionsblomst
  • English names: Purple passionflower, maypop

Passiflora incarnata is a beautiful and lush climbing plant native to the southeastern United States, where it grows in open woodland edges, meadows, and along roadsides. It distinguishes itself from many other passionflower species by its excellent cold tolerance and can – under the right conditions – be grown outdoors in large parts of Denmark.

The plant is especially known for its characteristic, exotic flowers in shades of lavender, purple, and white. The flowers have a complex, almost architectural structure with a prominent, crown-like fringe (corona) and are both fragrant and insect-friendly. Flowering usually spans the summer, and if the weather permits, the plant can produce large, yellow-green fruits – known as "maypops" – which are edible, aromatic, and slightly tart.

The leaves are three-lobed and light green, and the plant grows as a fast-climbing vine that can grow several meters in a season. It typically dies back to the ground in winter, but readily sprouts again from the robust rootstock in the spring.

Passiflora incarnata thrives best in full sun and in well-drained, light to medium soil. It can be grown in the open in Denmark if planted in a warm, sunny, and sheltered location – e.g., against a south-facing wall or in a sheltered corner. During severe frost, winter covering is recommended, but the plant normally manages down to -15 °C without issues, especially if the soil is kept well-drained.

This species is ideal for garden owners and passionflower enthusiasts who want a hardy, exotic-flowering climbing plant with both ornamental and practical value.

Germination of seeds

Please take a look at our article on germinating passion fruit seeds!

Pour lukewarm water over the seeds and then let them soak for 24 - 48 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm spot.

Passion fruit seeds can generally take a long time to germinate. You can try to speed up the process by carefully sanding the seeds with a nail file or fine sandpaper before soaking them.
