VERY HARDY – WITHSTANDS FROST AND DROUGHT
    • Latin name: Nannorrhops ritchieana
    • Danish names: Mazari palme, Afghanistan palme
    • English names: Mazari palm, Afghan palm

Nannorrhops ritchieana, often called the Mazari palm, is an extremely hardy fan palm native to the arid, mountainous regions of the Middle East and Western Asia – including Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. It is one of the most cold- and drought-tolerant palms in the world, making it particularly well-suited for cultivation in temperate and continental climates where few other palms thrive outdoors.

The plant grows as a multi-stemmed, slow-growing palm with a low, bushy form. Each stem bears a compact crown of stiff, fan-shaped leaves, which vary in color from dusty blue-green to silver-gray, depending on the variety and location. The appearance is dry and sculptural – a palm that fits just as well in a desert landscape as in a modern rock garden.

The palm is extremely resistant to both heat and cold. Once established, it can survive temperatures down to around -15 °C – some reports even suggest lower, especially in dry, well-drained conditions. It requires full sun and well-drained, preferably sandy soil, and appreciates minimal watering, as it is naturally adapted to drought.

    Cultivation and germination from seed:

Seeds of Nannorrhops ritchieana have a hard shell and germinate slowly – patience is required. It is recommended to soak the seeds in warm water for 3–5 days to soften the shell, perhaps combined with careful sanding or filing a little off the seed's outer layer. Then, sow in a deep pot with well-drained seed compost (e.g., coconut coir, sand, and perlite) and place in a warm location, preferably 25–30 °C.

Germination can take from 1 to several months. When the sprout emerges, plenty of light and warmth are important. As the palm forms a long taproot, it should be moved to a deeper pot or planted permanently in the ground in suitable climates soon after.

    Utility:

In addition to its decorative value, Nannorrhops ritchieana has traditionally been used locally for rope, basketry, and roofing material, thanks to its strong, tough leaf fibers. It has also been used in folk medicine and as a landscape plant in arid regions, where its robustness is essential.

The Mazari palm is ideal for palm enthusiasts and gardeners in cooler or drier climates who want a palm with both character and resilience. It is slow-growing, but rewards patience with a distinctive, almost sculptural expression and an ability to cope with conditions where other palms give up. A true desert survivor with potential for Northern European gardens. See also our entire collection of hardy plants.

    Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 3-5 days until the shell begins to soften. Change the water every day. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Note that palm seeds can generally take a long time to germinate.

    Childcare

This palm can tolerate some frost and can potentially be planted outdoors in a sheltered location, provided it is kept very dry during the winter. It may therefore be advantageous to grow it in a pot (especially while smaller).

    - Place in a bright spot with plenty of full sun
    - Prefers shelter from the wind
    - Drought-tolerant (water sparingly)
    - Prefers sandy, well-drained soil, preferably slightly calcareous
    - Fertilize during the growing season
    - Little to no water in winter
