  • Scientific name: Carpobrotus edulis
  • Danish names: Middelhavsfigen, strandfigen, isskræppe
  • English names: Hottentot fig, sour fig, ice plant

Carpobrotus edulis is a creeping succulent plant native to South Africa, where it covers sand dunes and coastal slopes with its juicy, triangular leaves and large, radiant flowers. It is one of the most distinctive plants of sunny coastal regions and is grown worldwide as ground cover, an ornamental plant, and for its edible, fig-like fruits.

The leaves are fleshy and green with a slightly glossy surface, which helps the plant withstand drought and salty air. The flowers are large and striking, 8–10 cm wide, and vary in color from lemon yellow to pink-purple. Once they wither, they develop fruits that resemble small figs – sweet-tart and edible.

Cultivation and requirements:

Carpobrotus edulis thrives best in full sun and in very well-drained, sandy or gravelly soil. It is extremely drought-tolerant and thrives in places where few other plants survive – e.g., in rock gardens, on dry slopes, in dunes, and as ground cover.

In Denmark, it can be grown outdoors during the summer and overwintered in a frost-free location. It cannot withstand long periods of frost, though it can tolerate brief periods down to about 0 °C if the soil is kept dry. It is also perfectly suited for large pots, where its trailing growth is beautifully displayed.

Cultivation from seeds:

The seeds are sown in a well-drained seed mix of sand and light soil. They should be covered only very lightly and kept moist at a temperature of 18–25 °C. Germination usually occurs after 2–4 weeks. The small plants are fast-growing and quickly form dense, low-growing cushions of succulent foliage.

Utility:

In its home country, the fruits – called sour figs – are used for preserves, jams, and dried snacks. The leaves have also been used traditionally as a natural remedy for sunburn and insect stings. As an ornamental plant, Carpobrotus edulis has great value in dry gardens, on rock features, and as decorative, low-maintenance ground cover.

Carpobrotus edulis is a perfect plant for those who love sun, stone, and sand – a robust, colorful, and low-growing succulent that brings a touch of the Mediterranean to even the most modest growing sites.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a thin layer of sand. Alternatively, place the seeds between damp paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-draining potting soil, optionally mixed with a little sand or perlite.

- Place in a bright spot, preferably in full sun
- Allow to dry out slightly between waterings
- Fertilize during the growing season with a little cactus fertilizer
- Not frost-tolerant
