RARE
- Latin name: Passiflora andreana
- Danish names: Miniature passion flower
- English names: Miniature passion vine
Passiflora andreana is a rare and unusual passion flower from the cool cloud forests of the Andes in Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador. It grows naturally at altitudes between approximately 2,500 and 3,300 meters above sea level, where temperatures are significantly lower than in the tropical lowland areas from which many other passion flowers originate. This makes the species particularly interesting for growers in cooler climates.
The plant develops elegant vines with beautiful, broad, and almost spoon-shaped leaves. During the flowering period, it produces a wealth of attractive purple flowers, which stand in beautiful contrast to the fresh green foliage. After flowering, small fruits are formed, which are edible.
Unlike many tropical passion flowers, Passiflora andreana thrives best in moderate temperatures and does not like extreme heat. This is precisely why it has become popular among collectors of so-called highland Passiflora.

Cultivation and requirements
Passiflora andreana prefers cooler conditions than many other passion flowers and thrives best with:
- Full sun to light partial shade
- Nutrient-rich and well-drained soil
- Consistent moisture
- Good air circulation
- Cool nights and moderate daytime temperatures
The species is particularly well-suited for greenhouses, sunrooms, or sheltered growing locations where the temperature does not get too high during the summer months.
It can tolerate light frost for short periods, making it hardier than many other Passiflora species.
Growing from seed
Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours before sowing. Sow them in a well-drained soil mix and keep the temperature around 18–25 °C. However, see our specific article on growing Passiflora from seed.
Germination can take from a few weeks to several months. Keep the soil slightly moist throughout the entire germination period.
Utility and collector value
Passiflora andreana is primarily a collector's plant. The combination of the beautiful purple flowers, the decorative leaves, and the species' unusual origin in the Andean cloud forests makes it one of the more exciting Passiflora species for enthusiasts.
For growers who often experience problems with tropical passion flowers in hot greenhouses or cold winters, Passiflora andreana can be an interesting alternative, as it is naturally adapted to a cooler mountain climate.
Passiflora andreana is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow a rare highland passion flower from seed – an elegant climbing plant with purple flowers, edible fruits, and high collector value.
