  • Latin name: Euphorbia leuconeura
  • Danish names: Madagaskar Juvel, spytplante
  • English names: Madagascar jewel, spurge

Euphorbia leuconeura, also known as the Madagascar jewel, is a decorative and easy-to-grow plant from Madagascar. It is known for its beautiful, dark green leaves with distinct, light-colored veins and its very unique way of dispersing seeds – hence the Danish name "spytplante" (spit plant).

The plant belongs to the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) and is not a palm, although its growth habit may resemble one.

Appearance and growth

Euphorbia leuconeura develops an upright, slightly succulent stem with a characteristic angular structure. At the top, a crown of elongated, dark green leaves forms with prominent, light-colored veins, giving the plant a very decorative and almost tropical look.

The plant typically grows 30–100 cm tall and can branch out over time. It blooms with small, discreet flowers, followed by seed pods that can "shoot" seeds several meters away – an efficient and fascinating propagation strategy.

Usage

The Madagascar jewel is a popular houseplant that is well-suited for both beginners and collectors. It fits perfectly in bright rooms, where it adds an exotic and structured appearance.

Cultivation and care

  • Light: Thrives best in bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some direct sun.
  • Temperature: Prefers 18–30 °C and does not tolerate frost.
  • Soil: Well-draining soil – preferably a mixture of potting soil and perlite.
  • Watering: Water moderately. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
  • Fertilizer: Apply a mild organic cactus fertilizer during the growing season.
  • Overwintering: Keep in a bright place and slightly dry at a minimum of approx. 12–15 °C.

Note

The plant contains a white latex (sap) that can be irritating to the skin and eyes. Therefore, handle with care when pruning or repotting. Euphorbia leuconeura is a characterful and easy plant that combines a tropical look with exciting biology – a perfect houseplant for those who want something a little different and alive in their home. 🌿
