PRODUCES EDIBLE FRUIT
  • Latin name: Musa velutina
  • Danish names: Dværgbanan, lyserød dværgbanan
  • English names: Hairy banana, pink banana, velvet banana

This is a beautiful banana plant that, as the name suggests, produces pink banana fruits. The fruits are actually edible, even though the plant is most often grown as an ornamental plant. With proper care, this banana can be considered to flower within the first year.

The plant originally comes from the eastern Himalayas but can now be found as an ornamental plant in many countries.

- Considered one of the easiest banana plants to grow

Seed germination

Lightly scarify the seed with fine sandpaper or a nail file. Then soak in warm water for 24 hours. Sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between layers of damp paper towel inside a sealed bag. Place in a bright, warm location.

Please note that the seeds can take up to 6 months to germinate!

Childcare

Best grown in a pot, although it can handle low temperatures.

- Place in a bright spot, preferably in some sun
- Prefers shelter from the wind
- Good nutrient-rich and well-draining soil
- Keep moist
- Fertilize during the growing season
