- Latin name: Myristica fragrans
- Danish names: Muskatnøddetræ, muskatnød
- English names: Nutmeg tree, nutmeg
Myristica fragrans is a tropical, evergreen tree native to the Moluccas in Indonesia – also known as the Spice Islands. It is precisely from here that the global trade in nutmeg and mace historically originated. The tree is quite unique in that it provides two different spices from the same fruit: the nutmeg itself and the aromatic mace (arillus), which encloses the seed.
The plant forms glossy, dark green, leathery leaves and a dense, elegant crown. When the tree is mature, it develops yellow-orange fruits the size of small apricots. Upon ripening, the fruit splits open to reveal the dark brown nutmeg surrounded by an intense red net – the mace. Both parts are dried and used as spices, but with different flavor profiles and culinary applications.
Cultivation and requirements:
Myristica fragrans is a distinctly tropical species that requires stable conditions to thrive. It prefers:
- Bright location without direct, harsh sunlight
- Nutrient-rich, well-drained and slightly acidic soil
- High humidity
- Constant warmth all year round
The plant tolerates no frost and in Denmark must be grown as a potted plant, ideally in a greenhouse, conservatory, or a very bright and warm room. The temperature should preferably be kept above 18 °C all year round. The soil should be kept slightly moist, but must never be waterlogged.
The nutmeg tree is slow-growing and is best suited to the patient grower.
Cultivation from seed:
Seeds of Myristica fragrans must be very fresh, as they quickly lose their viability. They are sown in an airy, well-drained soil mix and covered lightly. Optimal germination occurs at 25–30 °C and high humidity.
Germination typically occurs after 2–6 weeks. Young plants grow slowly and should be protected against drying out and temperature fluctuations.
It is important to be aware that Myristica fragrans is dioecious – there are male and female plants. Only female plants set fruit, and the sex can only be determined when the plant flowers, which often only happens after many years of growth.
Utility value:
Myristica fragrans is one of the world's most well-known and used spice plants. Nutmeg is used in both sweet and savory dishes, e.g., in potato dishes, pastries, and sauces, while mace has a more refined and slightly citrusy aroma and is used in finer cuisine, sausage making, and spice blends.
In addition to its culinary value, the plant has great historical and botanical significance and is a fascinating example of a spice tree that can be grown entirely from seed.
Myristica fragrans is an obvious choice for the dedicated plant enthusiast who wants to grow a real spice tree with both cultural history and practical application – a long-term, but extremely exciting plant in the collection.
