REQUIRES WARMTH AND HIGH HUMIDITY

  • Latin name: Nepenthes madagascariensis
  • Danish names: Kandebærer, madagascar kandebærer
  • English names: Madagascar pitcher plant

Nepenthes madagascariensis is one of the few carnivorous pitcher plants native to Africa, specifically the humid coastal regions of southern and eastern Madagascar. It has been known to botany since the 18th century and is one of the first Nepenthes species to be scientifically described. With its exotic appearance and natural adaptation to warm, humid conditions, it is an exceptionally exciting plant for collectors and carnivorous plant enthusiasts.

The plant forms narrow, upright leaves with a characteristic extension at the tip, from which the decorative pitchers develop. The pitchers are typically reddish-brown to green with marbled markings and function as passive insect traps. Prey is lured by nectar and color, slides into the pitcher, and is digested by enzymes and liquid—an effective adaptation to nutrient-poor growing sites.

Nepenthes madagascariensis thrives in warm and very humid conditions, preferably with high humidity and regular watering with clean, lime-free water (rainwater or demineralized water). It prefers a bright location without direct, harsh sun, and should be grown in an airy, acidic soil mix consisting of, for example, sphagnum moss and perlite. The temperature should be kept stable above 18 °C, and the humidity preferably above 60–70%.

Cultivation from seed:
Seeds of Nepenthes madagascariensis are very small and should be sown superficially in moist, sterile sphagnum moss or a carnivorous soil mix. The seeds should not be covered with soil, but simply pressed lightly onto the substrate and kept constantly moist. The germination process requires patience—it can take 4–12 weeks, and sometimes even longer. A stable temperature of 22–28 °C and high humidity are essential. It is recommended to use a mini-greenhouse-like setup with good ventilation and access to light, but without direct sun.
