TOLERATES LIGHT FROST

  • Latin name: Metrosideros excelsa
  • Danish names: New Zealandsk Juletræ, Pohutukawa
  • English names: Pohutukawa, New Zealand Christmas tree, iron tree

Metrosideros excelsa is one of New Zealand's most beloved and distinctive ornamental trees – known for its large, red inflorescences that bloom at Christmastime in its homeland. The flowers consist of hundreds of long, fiery red stamens that make the entire plant glow with dramatic and exotic color. The foliage is thick, leathery, and has a beautiful silvery-grey sheen, which protects the plant from wind and salt along the harsh coasts where it naturally grows.

The plant has a sculptural growth habit with characteristic, twisted branches and a broad, umbrella-shaped canopy, making it a truly unique ornamental plant for pots, conservatories, or mild outdoor microclimates.

Cultivation and requirements:

Metrosideros excelsa thrives best in full sun and in light, well-drained, and preferably sandy soil. It prefers a warm, sheltered location and tolerates drought once established.

Although it originates from a mild coastal climate, it is surprisingly robust and tolerates down to approx. –5 °C for short periods – especially if the soil is kept dry and the plant is sheltered. In Denmark, however, it is recommended to grow it in a large pot so it can be moved to a bright, frost-free place in winter, such as a greenhouse, conservatory, or sunroom.

Regular pruning is well tolerated and can be used to shape the plant into a bush or a compact small tree.

Cultivation from seed:

The seeds are very fine and small and should be sown on top of moist, well-drained seed compost without being covered. They require light to germinate. Keep the temperature at 18–22 °C and ensure even moisture. Germination usually occurs after 2–4 weeks.

The small plants grow slowly at first but become robust and hardy over time.

Utility:

In addition to its striking ornamental value, Metrosideros excelsa plays an important ecological role in its homeland. The flowers produce large amounts of nectar and attract birds, bees, and pollinators in droves. The tree is therefore often planted to increase biodiversity and support local pollinator populations.

As an ornamental plant, it is used to create a Mediterranean and coastal atmosphere, both in gardens, on patios, and in conservatories. Its solid foliage and salt tolerance also make it suitable for coastal areas where many other plants give up.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. The seeds must not be covered, as they require light to germinate. Place the seeds in a bright and warm spot, and keep the soil constantly moist.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-draining potting soil (preferably mixed with a little sand).
