  • Latin name: Stapelia variegata (syn. Orbea variegata)
  • Danish names: Ordensstjerne, ådselsblomst
  • English names: Starfish flower, carrion flower

Stapelia variegata, also known as the starfish flower, is a fascinating succulent from southern Africa. It is known for its distinctive star-shaped flowers with beautiful patterns in yellow, brownish, and purple hues. The plant belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is related to other spectacular “carrion flowers” such as Stapelia gigantea.

This species is particularly popular among succulent and cactus collectors, as it combines a compact appearance with a very distinctive bloom.

Appearance and growth

The starfish flower forms low mounds of fleshy, square-shaped stems that resemble small cacti, but without thorns. The stems are green and can take on reddish tones in bright light. The plant typically reaches 10–20 cm in height, but it can spread to form beautiful, dense clusters over time.

The flowers are flat and star-shaped with a decorative pattern reminiscent of a starfish. They emit a short-lived scent that resembles rotting meat, which attracts flies that act as pollinators in nature.

Usage

Stapelia variegata is primarily grown as an ornamental plant. It is ideal for succulent collections, pots, and windowsills, and also works well as a terrarium plant in dry terrarium setups or in greenhouses with plenty of light.

Cultivation and care

  • Light: Thrives best in a bright environment with plenty of indirect sun. Can tolerate direct sun in moderate amounts.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 18–30 °C and does not tolerate frost.
  • Soil: Well-drained cactus or succulent soil with sand or gravel.
  • Watering: Water sparingly. Let the soil dry out between waterings.
  • Fertilizer: A mild cactus fertilizer during the growing season promotes healthy growth.
  • Overwintering: Keep in a bright and relatively dry spot during winter at a minimum of approx. 10 °C.

Stapelia variegata is an exciting and decorative succulent that combines easy cultivation with a truly unique bloom. An ideal plant for collectors who appreciate unusual forms and fascinating details in their plant collection.
