  • Latin name: Adenium obesum
  • Danish names: Ørkenrose
  • English names: Desert rose

Adenium obesum is a striking and very popular succulent from the arid regions of East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It is known for its characteristic swollen stem (caudex), which acts as a water reservoir, as well as for its beautiful, funnel-shaped flowers in shades of pink, red, white, and often with a darker center. The combination of sculptural form and rich flowering makes the desert rose a classic among collectors of caudex and succulent plants.

The plant forms glossy, dark green leaves clustered at the top of its short branches. During the growing season, it can flower repeatedly, especially when provided with plenty of light and warmth. In dry or cooler periods, it naturally enters dormancy and may lose its leaves partially or completely – a sign that it is conserving energy.

Cultivation and requirements:

Adenium obesum thrives best in very bright light to full sun and requires a very well-draining, mineral-based soil, such as cactus soil mixed with extra sand or gravel. It prefers warm temperatures and tolerates drought far better than overwatering.

In Denmark, it is grown as an indoor or greenhouse plant. It does not tolerate frost and should be kept above 12–15 °C year-round. In the summer, it can benefit from being placed outdoors in a sunny, rain-sheltered spot. Watering should be significantly reduced during dormant periods, especially in winter.

Cultivation from seed:

The seeds germinate relatively easily and are sown in a light, well-draining soil mix. They should only be covered very lightly and kept at 22–30 °C. Germination often occurs after just 5–14 days. Seed-grown plants develop a distinct caudex early on, which makes propagation from seed particularly attractive for those who want plants with a natural shape.

Utility:

Adenium obesum is grown exclusively as an ornamental plant and is highly valued for its combination of flowering and sculptural growth. It is perfectly suited for pots, bonsai-like displays, and as a focal plant in bright rooms, greenhouses, or collections of succulents and caudex plants.

Adenium obesum is a robust and rewarding plant for those who can provide light, warmth, and good drainage – a decorative desert plant that rewards minimal care with an impressive shape and colorful flowers. 🌸

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a thin layer of sand. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm spot.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-drained cactus soil, optionally mixed with a little sand or perlite.
