  • Latin name: Carica papaya "dwarf"
  • Danish names: Melontræ, dværg papaya, papaja, Dværg-papaya
  • English names: Dwarf Papaya

Carica papaya ‘Dwarf’ is a compact and early-fruiting variety of the classic papaya – a tropical beauty known for its large, juicy fruits and exotic appearance. Where the common Carica papaya can reach several meters in height, the ‘Dwarf’ remains much more manageable and is therefore perfectly suited for cultivation in large pots, a greenhouse, or a conservatory.

The plant forms a sturdy, upright stem topped with large, palmately lobed leaves, which create an almost palm-like appearance. Even as a young plant, it can begin to flower and set fruit – often at a height of just 80–120 cm. The flowers are small, creamy-yellow, and fragrant, while the fruits are oval and golden, with sweet, orange flesh and a fresh, tropical aroma.

Cultivation and requirements:

Carica papaya ‘Dwarf’ thrives best in full sun and warm conditions. It requires nutrient-rich, well-drained soil that is kept evenly moist but never waterlogged. The temperature should preferably not drop below 15 °C, and the plant thrives optimally around 22–30 °C.

In Denmark, it is best suited for a greenhouse, conservatory, or large containers, where it can be moved indoors during cold periods. With plenty of light, warmth, and a little patience, however, one may be lucky enough to harvest ripe fruits even in a northern climate.

The plant is fast-growing but has a relatively short lifespan – 3–5 years is normal – which makes it ideal as an exotic, lush potted plant that provides a tropical atmosphere both indoors and outdoors.

Growing from seed:

The seeds are sown in moist, well-drained soil and covered lightly. They germinate best at 25–30 °C and require even humidity and good ventilation. Germination typically takes 2–4 weeks. Seedlings should be transplanted early, as papaya does not like its roots to be disturbed. It is said that one should sow several seeds together, as they release a hormone that promotes germination.

Utility:

Papaya fruits are rich in vitamin C, beta-carotene, and the natural enzyme papain, which aids digestion. They are eaten fresh, used in smoothies, desserts, and salads, or dried as a tropical snack. The unripe, green fruits can be prepared as a vegetable in Asian dishes.

Beyond its utility, Carica papaya ‘Dwarf’ is an extremely decorative plant – with its large, palmately lobed leaves and rapid growth, it brings an authentic tropical vibe to any collection.

Carica papaya ‘Dwarf’ is the ideal papaya for Nordic conditions – compact, fast-growing, and easy to cultivate, even for the impatient plant enthusiast dreaming of a taste of the tropics on their windowsill.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a warm, bright location.

You should sow several seeds together, as it is said to release a hormone that triggers germination.

Childcare

Papayas should be planted in pots as they cannot tolerate frost. Once the plants reach approximately 15 cm, they require plenty of sun. They can be placed outside during the summer in a sheltered, sunny spot.

- Soil: Good, well-draining, slightly acidic soil with a little sand
- Place in a bright, sunny location
- Prefers slightly high humidity
- Preferably sheltered from wind
- Water well during the growing season and a little less in winter
- The soil should ideally not dry out
- Fertilize during the growing season
