  • Latin name: Carica papaya "Cauca"
  • Danish names: Melon tree, papaya, papaja
  • English names: Papaya

Carica papaya 'Cauca' is a fruit variety of papaya originating from the Cauca region in southwestern Colombia. This variety is known for its compact growth, early fruiting, and delicious fruits – characteristics that make it particularly suitable for cultivation in pots, greenhouses, and protected gardens in warm conditions.

The plant has the characteristic palm-like growth habit with an upright stem and large, deeply lobed leaves that cluster in a rosette at the top. It grows quickly under the right conditions and can begin to set fruit within the first year. The fruits of 'Cauca' are medium-sized, golden-yellow when ripe, and have juicy orange to reddish flesh with a sweet, tropical aroma and a slight nutmeg-like undertone.

The variety is known for its reliability and compact size compared to commercial papaya types, making it ideal for hobby growing.

Carica papaya 'Cauca' requires warmth, high humidity, and plenty of light to thrive. It prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and should be watered regularly, but without becoming waterlogged. In Denmark, it is best suited for cultivation in large pots in a greenhouse, conservatory, or tropical plant corner, where the temperature is kept above 15–18 °C year-round. It is not frost-tolerant.

Utility:
The papaya fruit is rich in vitamins A and C, fiber, and enzymes such as papain, which promotes digestion. It can be eaten fresh, used in smoothies, salads, desserts, or as a tenderizing ingredient in marinades. The seeds are edible in small amounts and have a peppery, spicy taste. In traditional medicine, both the fruit, seeds, and leaves are used for a variety of purposes – from promoting digestion to anti-inflammatory treatment.

Carica papaya 'Cauca' is the obvious choice for the tropical-enthusiast grower who wants a fast-growing, decorative, and edible plant with high utility. A compact and fruitful variety that brings both warmth and flavor to the greenhouse and conservatory.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel, which is then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm spot.

You should sow several seeds together, as it is said to release a hormone that triggers germination.

Childcare

Papayas must be planted in pots as they do not tolerate frost. When the plants reach approximately 15 cm, they need plenty of sun. They can optionally be placed outside during the summer in a sheltered, sunny spot.

- Soil: Good, well-drained, slightly acidic soil with a little sand
- Place in a bright, sunny location
- Prefers slightly high humidity
- Needs shelter from the wind
- Water well during the growing season and a little less in winter
- The soil should ideally not dry out
