  • Latin name: Carica papaya
  • Danish names: Melontræ, papaya, papaja
  • English names: Papaya
  • Variety: Honey Dew

Honey Dew is one of the most popular papaya varieties. The growth is semi-dwarf, which means it does not grow very tall (2-3 meters). It produces many fruits weighing 1.5 - 2.0 kg, which are said to be sweet and tasty. The fruits are yellow and the flesh is dark orange to almost reddish.

The well-known and flavorful papaya originates from Mexico, from where it later spread as a crop to the entire world. The papaya is a small tree, usually with a single trunk, which for the larger varieties can reach up to 10 meters in height. The flowers, and later the papaya fruits, develop from the leaf sheaths themselves. This gives the papaya its characteristic appearance, with the fruits sitting closely against the trunk. The trees do not live very long (for trees) and typically do not reach more than 20 years of age.

The most common way to grow new papaya trees is from seeds. Fortunately, the fruits contain many seeds, which germinate easily if they are fresh.

This is a semi-dwarf variety with yellow skin and reddish flesh.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then put in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

You should sow several seeds together, as it is said to release a hormone that triggers germination.

Childcare

Papaya should be planted in pots as they do not tolerate frost. When the plants reach approximately 15 cm, they prefer plenty of sun. They can optionally be placed outside during the summer in a sheltered spot with plenty of sun.

- Soil: Good, well-draining, slightly acidic soil with a little sand
- Place in a bright and sunny location
- Prefers slightly high humidity
- Preferably sheltered from wind
- Water well during the growing season and a little less in winter
- The soil should preferably not dry out
- Fertilize during the growing season
