  • Latin name: Passiflora caerulea
  • Danish names: Blå passion, normal passion, blå passionsblomst
  • English names: blue passionflower, bluecrown passionflower, common passion flower

Passiflora caerulea, or blue passionflower, is one of the most common passion plants in Denmark. It requires a lot of light and preferably high humidity, but it is also one of the best plants to keep in a living room (although a greenhouse or conservatory suits it better). It produces some peculiar blue-and-white flowers.

It tolerates quite low temperatures, and you can have it overwinter outdoors by planting it in a sheltered spot and covering it well during the winter. We have succeeded in doing this several times.

- Produces edible fruits, although they are said not to have the best flavor

Germination of seeds

Pour lukewarm water over the seeds and then let them soak for 24–48 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed-starting mix or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between layers of moist paper towel, which is then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright, warm location.

Passion fruit seeds can generally take a long time to germinate. You can try to speed up the process by carefully sanding the seeds with a nail file or fine-grit sandpaper before soaking them.

Childcare

Best planted in a pot, which can optionally be placed outdoors in the summer and in shelter during the winter. Can overwinter in a very protected spot with plenty of cover.

- Place in a bright spot, preferably in some sun
- Prefers shelter from the wind
- Good, nutrient-rich, and well-drained soil
- Must be kept moist but not wet
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Does NOT tolerate frost
