  • Latin name: Passiflora edulis flavicarpa
  • Danish names: Gul passionsfrugt, gul passion, gylden passionsfrugt
  • English names: Yellow passionfruit, golden passionfruit

Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa is the golden variety of the passionfruit – known for its larger, yellow fruits and its intense tropical aroma. It originates from South America but is widely cultivated today in countries such as Brazil, Australia, and Southeast Asia, where it is an important fruit crop.

The flowers are beautiful and exotic, typical of the Passiflora genus, with white petals and a corona of purple to blue filaments. The fruits are round to oval, shiny yellow when ripe, and often larger than the purple variety (f. edulis). The taste is tarter and fresher – perfect for juices, desserts, and drinks.

Cultivation and requirements:

The yellow passionfruit requires warmth and thrives best in full sun and in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. It requires regular watering and a support to climb on.

In Denmark, Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa should be grown in a greenhouse, conservatory, or as a container plant that can be moved indoors during winter. It is less cold-tolerant than the purple variety and requires a minimum of 12–15 °C to thrive optimally.

Cultivation from seed:

Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours before sowing to soften the seed coat. Then sow in a light, well-drained soil mix and keep at 22–28 °C. Germination usually takes 2–8 weeks but can be irregular. The small plants grow quickly and are relatively easy to care for under the right conditions.

Utility:

The fruits of Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa are particularly rich in vitamin C and are often used in juice production due to their fresher, tarter taste. They are also fantastic for desserts, sorbets, and tropical cocktails. As an ornamental plant, it is an exotic addition with its beautiful flowers and lush growth.

Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa is an obvious choice for those who want a passionfruit with both ornamental value and a fresher, more tropical taste than the classic purple variety.

Germination of seeds

Pour lukewarm water over the seeds and then let them soak for 24 - 48 hours. Sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between damp paper towels, which are then put in a sealed bag. Place in a warm, bright location.

Passion fruit seeds can generally take a long time to germinate. You can try to speed up the process by carefully filing the seeds with a nail file or fine sandpaper before soaking them.
