EDIBLE FRUITS

  • Latin name: Passiflora edulis "Flame Ruby"
  • Danish names: Passion fruit "Flame Ruby", granadilla
  • English names: Passionfruit, Flame Ruby passionfruit

Passiflora edulis 'Flame Ruby' is a striking variety of the well-known passion fruit, grown for its deep red to ruby-colored fruits and intense, tropical aroma. With its decorative foliage, beautiful flowers, and delicious fruits, it is one of the most attractive varieties of passion fruit for both ornamental and practical use.

The flowers are typical of the Passiflora genus – large and exotic, with white petals and a ring of purple to violet filaments. They attract pollinators and later produce the characteristic round fruits, which ripen to a shiny, deep red color. The pulp is juicy, sweet-tart, and filled with aromatic notes, making it particularly suitable for eating fresh, in juice, or in desserts.

Cultivation and requirements:

'Flame Ruby' thrives best in warm and sunny conditions with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. It requires regular watering but does not tolerate waterlogged soil. As a climbing plant, it needs support, such as a trellis or strings, and can quickly cover a wall or a greenhouse.

In Denmark, it should be grown in a greenhouse, conservatory, or large pots that can be moved indoors during the winter. It does not tolerate frost and requires a minimum of 10 °C to thrive.

Growing from seed:

The seeds should be soaked in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours before sowing to improve germination. A good alternative is to use passion fruit juice. Sow in a light, well-drained seed compost and keep at 22–28 °C. Germination can take from 2 weeks to 2 months. The seedlings grow quickly and are relatively easy to cultivate under the right conditions.

Utility:

The fruits of Passiflora edulis 'Flame Ruby' are extremely rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. The deep red skins make the variety particularly attractive both visually and culinarily, and it is frequently used in desserts, smoothies, and salads. In addition to fruit production, the plant has great ornamental value with its exotic flowers and lush foliage.

Passiflora edulis 'Flame Ruby' is an obvious choice for anyone who wants both a beautiful climbing plant and the opportunity to harvest their own ruby-red passion fruits.

Germination of seeds

Pour lukewarm water over the seeds and then let them soak for 24 - 48 hours. Sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between damp paper towels, which are then put in a sealed bag. Place in a warm, bright spot.

Passion fruit seeds can generally take a long time to germinate. You can try to speed up the process by carefully filing the seeds with a nail file or fine sandpaper before soaking them.
