  • Latin name: Asimina triloba
  • Danish names: Paw paw, Indianer banan, pawpaw
  • English names: Paw paw, American papaw, pawpaw, paw-paw

The paw paw originates from North America, where it grows in the shade of other trees. Its North American origins make it well-suited to our temperate climate. It produces large, flavorful fruits that are often described as the papaya of the north. However, the trees must reach a certain size before they produce fruit.

The paw paw is often described as the overlooked mango of the north. And imagine having a plant (or rather, a tree) in the garden that produces large fruits with a flavor described as a cross between mango, strawberry, and banana!

To achieve the best pollination, it is recommended to have two different varieties. Therefore, we also offer 2 different types of seeds:

  • Sunflower (seeds from pure plants of the "Sunflower" variety)
  • Sunflower x Prima (seeds from a cross between the two varieties "Prima" and "Sunflower")

Both types of seeds, however, come from self-pollinating varieties, so you can manage with just a single variety.

Note: If the seeds are not sown immediately, they are best stored in the refrigerator.

You can also choose to buy it as a plant here instead

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

These seeds are already stratified and ready to be sown. Non-stratified seeds first require a period of cold. This can be achieved by placing them in the refrigerator for approximately 100 days together with a little moist paper towel.

Childcare

Paw paw trees can be planted outdoors. However, for the first few years, it is a good idea to protect them slightly during the winter. This can be done by placing straw or spruce branches around the plants.

- Place in a bright spot, but out of too much direct sunlight
- Prefers a little extra moisture
- Fertilize during the growing season
