- English names: Pelican flower, giant pelican flower
Aristolochia grandiflora is an unusual and very striking climbing plant from tropical regions in Central America and the Caribbean. The species is especially known for its enormously large, dramatic flowers, which belong among the most distinctive in the plant world. The flowers are pendulous, darkly patterned, and often equipped with a long, narrow “tail,” giving them an almost surreal appearance.
The plant develops long, climbing or twining shoots and large, heart-shaped leaves, which quickly provide a lush, tropical look. The flowers emit a powerful scent, which in nature attracts flies and other pollinators. As with other species in the genus, the shape of the flower is specialized to lure and temporarily trap pollinators until pollination has occurred.
Aristolochia grandiflora is often compared to Aristolochia gigantea, which is also known for its large and spectacular flowers. Where A. gigantea often has a broader, rounder, and flatter flower, A. grandiflora is typically more elongated and dramatic with a distinct tail and an even more exotic, almost grotesque floral expression.
Cultivation and requirements
Aristolochia grandiflora thrives best in a very bright location, preferably with some sun during the day, and prefers:
- nutrient-rich, humus-rich, and well-drained soil
- consistent watering during the growing season
- warmth and high humidity
- support to climb on
- plenty of organic fertilizer during growth
The plant is not frost-tolerant and in Denmark is best grown as a container plant, in a greenhouse, conservatory, or other bright and warm environment. It can be kept outdoors during the summer months in a warm and sheltered spot, but must be overwintered frost-free. The temperature should preferably be kept above 12–15 °C.
Growing from seed
Seeds of Aristolochia grandiflora are sown in a light, humus-rich, and well-drained soil mix and covered lightly. Soaking in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours before sowing can promote germination.
For best results, the following is recommended:
- temperature of 22–28 °C
- high humidity
- consistently moist, but not wet, soil
Germination typically occurs within 2–8 weeks, but can be uneven and prolonged. The young plants usually grow relatively quickly in warm conditions and develop twining shoots early on, which require support. Flowering is normally only achieved on more mature plants.
Utility and collector value
Aristolochia grandiflora is primarily grown as a collector's and ornamental plant. Its value lies in the truly unusual flowers, which make it one of the most spectacular climbing plants you can grow from seed.
For collectors of tropical climbing plants, it is an obvious supplement to Aristolochia gigantea. The two species have the same exotic appeal but differ significantly in the shape and expression of the flower, which makes it extra exciting to grow both.
Aristolochia grandiflora is an obvious choice for the patient plant enthusiast who wishes to grow a completely unusual and eye-catching climbing plant from seed – with flowers that are among the most fascinating in the tropical plant world.
