Phenakospermum guyannense is an impressive and relatively rare tropical plant from the rainforests of northern South America, particularly Guyana, Suriname, and northern Brazil. It is closely related to the better-known Ravenala madagascariensis (traveller's palm), but differs in its more rainforest-like appearance, its vigorous growth, and its natural adaptation to very humid environments.
The plant forms enormous, banana-like leaves that sit in a fan-shaped structure and can grow several meters long. The stem is robust and composed of tightly packed leaf bases, which gives the plant a monumental and almost architectural appearance. In nature, Phenakospermum guyannense can reach significant heights and dominate the undergrowth of the rainforest.
Cultivation and requirements:
Phenakospermum guyannense thrives best in very bright light to full sun, but appreciates light protection from the harshest midday sun in hot climates. It prefers:
- Nutrient-rich, moisture-retentive, but well-drained soil. We recommend this
- Abundant watering during the growing season
- High humidity
- Stable warmth
- Regular fertilization during the growing period with tropical fertilizer
The plant is not frost-tolerant and must be grown in Denmark as a potted plant that can be kept outdoors during the summer months and overwintered in a bright, frost-free location. The temperature should preferably be kept above 12–15 °C year-round. In cooler periods, growth may stall, but the plant quickly picks up again when warmth and light return.
Growing from seed:
The seeds are relatively large and germinate best in an airy, well-drained soil mix. They should be sown lightly covered and kept constantly moist at 25–30 °C. Germination can be slow and uneven, taking anywhere from several weeks to months. Patience is necessary, but the reward is a very striking and fast-growing plant.
Young plants first develop broad, banana-like leaves before the characteristic fan shape gradually becomes evident.
Use and utility:
Phenakospermum guyannense is primarily grown as an ornamental plant and is especially prized for its extreme, tropical look. It is used in botanical gardens, tropical landscaping, and large greenhouses, where its size and structure truly come into their own.
As a collector's plant, it is an exciting alternative to Ravenala, especially for those who want a rarer and authentic South American counterpart. See also our entire selection of exciting palm seeds.
Phenakospermum guyannense is the plant for the ambitious plant enthusiast – a dramatic, large-leaved, and rare tropical species that brings an authentic rainforest vibe to the collection.
