  • Latin name: Tacca leontopetaloides
  • Danish names: Polynesian bat flower
  • English names: Polynesian arrowroot, arrowroot, East Indies arrowroot, pia, seashore bat lily

Bat flowers originate from Southeast Asia and get their name from the incredibly beautiful and remarkable flowers they produce. The flowers are large with long "whiskers" and, with a little imagination, resemble a bat.

The Polynesian arrowroot has a long history as a cultivated plant, having been grown as a crop for thousands of years. In winter, the leaves and stems wither and the plant dies back to large tubers that can resemble those of Amorphophallus. It is these tubers that, like yam, have been used in cooking. During this dormant period, water less frequently.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a thin layer of sand. The seeds need good heat to germinate. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel (the baggie method), which is then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright, warm location.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with good, well-draining potting soil (preferably mixed with a little sand and orchid bark). Can optionally be placed on a tray with stones and water (or similar) to increase humidity.

- Place in a bright spot, but out of direct sunlight
- Soil (fine bark : peat : sand | 5 : 4 : 1)
- Water generously, but requires good drainage in the soil
- Requires high humidity
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Ideal for the bathroom
