  • Latin name: Musa acuminata acuminata
  • Danish names: Prydbanan
  • English names: Hairy banana, pink banana, velvet banana

The ornamental banana originates from Southern Asia, where it grows in a warm and tropical climate. Many of our edible bananas have been bred from this Musa acuminata. It is a robust and fast-growing banana palm, which makes it well-suited as an ornamental plant in the home.

Musa acuminata acuminata is a subspecies of Musa acuminata, which originates from India, southern China, and western Malaysia. However, it has since been introduced as an ornamental plant to a number of other countries.

- The fruits can be eaten, but it is not recommended.

Seed germination

Scarify the seed lightly with fine sandpaper or a nail file. Then soak in warm water for 24 hours. Sow the seeds afterwards in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between layers of damp paper towel inside a sealed bag. Place in a bright, warm spot.

Note that it can take up to 6 months for the seeds to germinate!
