Drosera prolifera is another fantastic member of the "Queensland sundews", originating from a small area in Australia (Queensland), where it grows in dense rainforest. Unlike almost all other sundews (and carnivorous plants in general), Drosera prolifera does not like sunlight. Too much light can actually easily kill the plant. However, this makes Drosera prolifera a fantastic terrarium plant, as it prefers slightly higher humidity.
Drosera prolifera is known for its delicate, round leaves, which are covered in red, sticky tentacles that shimmer like tiny jewels in the light. These tentacles secrete a sticky substance that attracts and traps insects. The stronger the light, the more red color will appear. Stronger light also contributes to smaller and more compact plants.
The flowers are very distinctive, resembling those of its sister species Drosera adelae and Drosera schizandra, and emerge as small clusters of pink flowers on long flower stalks.
- Best grown in pure sphagnum moss, possibly mixed with a little carnivorous plant soil.
