Drosera schizandra is another fantastic member of the carnivorous "Queensland sundew" plants, originating from a small area of Australia (Queensland), where it grows in dense rainforest. Unlike almost all other sundews (and carnivorous plants in general), Drosera schizandra does not like sunlight. Too much light can actually easily kill the plant, and this species should especially not be kept in too bright a spot. However, this makes Drosera schizandra an excellent terrarium plant, as it prefers slightly higher humidity.
Drosera schizandra has large, heart-shaped leaves covered in fine, sticky tentacles. The leaves change color from green to red depending on the light conditions, providing an alluring and colorful appearance. Just like with Drosera prolifera and Drosera adelae, stronger light results in a redder color. Stronger light also contributes to smaller and more compact plants.
The flowers are small, star-shaped and light pink to bright red depending on the light intensity.
- Best grown in pure sphagnum moss, possibly mixed with a little carnivorous plant soil.
