  • Latin name: Psidium guajava "Colombian red"
  • Danish names: Rød Guava
  • English names: Colombian red guava, red-fleshed guava

Psidium guajava 'Colombian Red' is a special fruit variety of the classic guava, known for its juicy, aromatic, and deep red flesh. This variety originates from Colombia and is grown for its particularly flavorful fruits, which are sweeter and more intense in aroma than many other types of guava. It is perfectly suited for eating fresh as well as for use in juices, smoothies, jams, and tropical desserts.

The plant has the same dense and decorative growth as the standard guava, with glossy, dark green leaves and a compact, bushy shape that makes it particularly suitable for cultivation in large pots. In the summer, it blooms with fragrant, white flowers that develop into round or oval fruits with a golden-yellow or light green skin and the characteristic red flesh.

Psidium guajava 'Colombian Red' thrives best in full sun and in a warm, sheltered location. It requires well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and regular watering during the growing season, but can tolerate short periods of drought. The plant is not hardy in Danish winters and should therefore be grown in a pot so that it can be moved indoors during the winter. It should be overwintered at a minimum of 5–10 °C and preferably with good access to light.

Utility value:
The fruits of the 'Colombian Red' are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and dietary fiber, and also have a high content of lycopene – the same health-promoting compound found in tomatoes and watermelons. They are used both fresh and in processed products such as juices, sorbets, cordials, and confectionery. Furthermore, both the leaves and fruit have traditionally been used in folk medicine to support digestion and the immune system.

This variety is ideal for those who want a decorative and exotic useful plant with both high ornamental value and delicate fruits. Psidium guajava 'Colombian Red' brings the taste and scent of tropical fruit directly into the container garden or greenhouse – and is at the same time a robust and easy-to-grow plant under the right conditions.

Seed germination

Pour boiling water over the seeds and let them soak for 24 hours. This helps to break down the hard seed coat. Then, sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel, which is then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Childcare

Must be grown in a pot, as it cannot tolerate frost and must therefore be moved indoors during the winter.
