FROST TOLERANT

  • Latin name: Acer palmatum "Atropurpureum"
  • Danish names: Rød Japansk løn, rød Japansk ahorn
  • English names: Red Japanese maple

Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ is one of the most well-known and beloved varieties of Japanese maple – an elegant, compact, and colorful shrub or small tree that graces gardens all over the world. It is closely related to the natural species Acer palmatum, but is distinguished by its characteristic deep red to purple leaves, which retain their color throughout the entire growing season. Where the green-leaved species expresses classic freshness and spring-green tones, ‘Atropurpureum’ adds warmth, depth, and drama to the garden.

The leaves are palmately lobed with 5–7 pointed tips and a fine, almost translucent structure. In the autumn, they turn from dark red to an intense, glowing carmine – one of the most beautiful autumn sights one can experience in the garden. The branches are slender and elegantly curved, and the tree's natural growth form is round and harmonious.

Cultivation and requirements:

Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ thrives best in light shade to partial sun, where the leaves gain color without being scorched by overly strong sun. It prefers nutrient-rich, moisture-retentive, but well-drained soil, preferably slightly acidic and without too much lime.

The plant is fully hardy in Denmark and performs best when planted in a location protected from strong wind and drying out. It is excellently suited for Japanese-inspired gardens, courtyards, pots, and as a specimen tree in smaller gardens. Regular watering during dry periods helps to keep the leaf color beautiful throughout the summer.

Cultivation from seed:

Seeds of Acer palmatum require cold stratification in order to germinate. Normally, they are placed in moist sand or peat moss and stored cool for 2–3 months before being sown in spring soil at 15–20 °C. However, we have already stratified the seeds, so this is not necessary. Should there be challenges in getting the seeds to germinate, you can certainly try stratifying them again. Please be aware that seedlings from ‘Atropurpureum’ will not necessarily have identical leaf color – the color varies from green to red depending on genetic inheritance, which often results in beautiful and unique individuals.

Utility:

Beyond its ornamental value, the Japanese maple plays a central role in Asian garden art, where it symbolizes peace, patience, and changeability. ‘Atropurpureum’ is especially valued for its ability to create contrast and depth in the planting – a perfect complement to green bamboo, evergreen shrubs, or rock gardens.

Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ is the ideal choice for those who want a small tree with a big impact – a refined classic that combines grace, color play, and structure all year round.

Seed germination

First, snap the "wings" off the seed. Then, soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place them between moist paper towels, which are then put in a plastic bag and placed in a bright spot. After 1 year, they can be planted out. Protect them with straw or spruce branches during the first few winters.

If the seeds do not germinate initially, you can try placing them in the refrigerator for 90 days and then try again.
