TOLERATES LIGHT FROST
  • Latin name: Passiflora manicata
  • Danish names: Rød passionsfrugt
  • English names: Red passionflower

Red passionflower originates from Colombia and Ecuador and gets its name from its beautiful, large red flowers. In nature, the plant can be either evergreen or deciduous, depending on how cold the climate is where it grows. In cold regions, it will lose its leaves and may die back completely, only to shoot again from the roots when the temperature rises again.

If you wish to try keeping this species outdoors all year round, it is recommended to provide it with some protection. Before the frost arrives, you can place spruce branches, straw, or similar material around the "trunk" to protect it from the worst of the frost.

- The fruits are NOT edible

Germination of seeds

Pour lukewarm water over the seeds and then let them soak for 24 - 48 hours. Sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel, then place them in a sealed bag. Keep in a bright, warm place.

Passion fruit seeds can generally take a long time to germinate. You can try to speed up the process by carefully abrading the seeds with a nail file or fine sandpaper before soaking them.
