Drosera rotundifolia, also known as the round-leaved sundew, is a fascinating carnivorous plant that occurs naturally in Denmark, particularly in nutrient-poor, wet areas such as bogs and raised bogs. This unique plant is characterized by its round, rosette-shaped leaves, which are covered in glistening, sticky tentacles. The tentacles secrete a sticky substance that traps small insects, which are then digested to provide the plant with the necessary nutrients it does not obtain from the soil.
The round-leaved sundew is not only a fascinating sight with its shimmering droplets, but also an important species for the Danish ecosystem, as it thrives in some of the most vulnerable and protected habitat types. With its natural adaptations to nutrient-poor growing sites, it is a remarkable addition to any collection of rare and exciting plants.
This plant is suitable as a terrarium plant or for specialized carnivorous plant setups, where one can recreate its preferred moist and acidic conditions. Drosera rotundifolia requires a bright location and regular watering with rainwater to thrive optimally. It can be grown in either dead sphagnum moss or living sphagnum moss, preferably mixed with a little perlite.
- The seeds are quite small, but germinate easily.
