RARE | REQUIRES WARMTH

  • Latin name: Passiflora seemannii
  • Danish names: Seemanns passionsfrugt, Seemanns passionsblomst
  • English names: Seemann's passionflower, Seemann's Passion Flower

Passiflora seemannii is a rare and exotic climbing plant in the passionflower family, native to Central America – particularly Panama and Costa Rica. Named after the German botanist Berthold Seemann, it is known for its tropical splendor and remarkable flowers, which differ significantly from the more common Passiflora species.

The flowers are complex and striking, with dark purple to bluish-violet petals and a dramatic, curly corona (crown structure) in shades of white, violet, and dark blue. They appear almost "multi-layered" in structure and are a botanical work of art in miniature. Flowering typically occurs during warm and humid periods, attracting nectar-seeking insects and butterflies.

The leaves are three-fingered, deep green, and leathery, giving the plant tropical and dense foliage. As a climber, P. seemannii requires support and climbing opportunities, and under the right conditions, it can quickly cover a trellis, pergola, or fence.

Cultivation and requirements:
Passiflora seemannii requires warmth, high humidity, and a bright location away from direct, drying sun. It prefers well-drained, humus-rich, and slightly acidic soil and thrives best in a greenhouse, conservatory, or tropical plant environment. It cannot tolerate frost and should be kept at a minimum of 10–15 °C all year round.

Regular watering and high humidity are important for growth and flowering. Light pruning as needed encourages branching and flower formation.

Cultivation from seeds:
Seeds of Passiflora seemannii should be soaked in warm water for 24–48 hours before sowing. They should be sown in a light, well-drained seed mix and kept in a warm place (25–28 °C) with high humidity. Germination can be irregular and take from 3 weeks to several months, so patience is necessary. Fresh seeds have a significantly higher germination rate. Once the seedlings are large enough, they can be repotted individually into deep pots with support.

Utility:
Although Passiflora seemannii is primarily grown as an ornamental plant, many Passiflora species, including this one, also have ecological significance as host plants for butterfly larvae (especially for Heliconius species). The fruits are generally not edible in this species, but the plant is highly valuable for collectors and botanical gardens.

Passiflora seemannii is an exclusive and visually spectacular plant for the dedicated grower who wants something rare, tropical, and botanically fascinating in their collection. A passionflower that lives up to its name with its complexity and beauty.

Germination of seeds

Pour lukewarm water over the seeds and then let them soak for 24 - 48 hours. Sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between damp paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Keep in a warm, bright place.

Passion fruit seeds can generally take a long time to germinate. You can try to speed up the process by carefully filing the seeds with a nail file or fine sandpaper before soaking them.

Childcare

Plant in a pot that can be moved in and out depending on the weather.

- Place in a bright spot, preferably with some sun
- Prefers shelter from the wind
- Good, nutrient-rich, and well-drained soil
- Keep moist but not wet
- Fertilize during the growing season
- NOT frost-tolerant
