FROST TOLERANT

  • Latin name: Zanthoxylum simulans
  • Danish names: Kinesisk pebertræ, Sichuan-peber, Sichuan peber
  • English names: Chinese prickly ash, Sichuan pepper

Zanthoxylum simulans is one of the most cold-tolerant and easy-to-grow species in the genus and originates from central and western China. It is closely related to Zanthoxylum piperitum (Japanese pepper) and Zanthoxylum armatum, but differs in its remarkable hardiness, vigorous growth, and characteristic, aromatic fruit husks.

The plant develops as a large shrub or small tree with thorny branches and pinnate leaves. When the leaves are rubbed, a fresh, citrusy scent is released. In summer, small flowers appear, followed by reddish fruits which, upon ripening, open to reveal black seeds. It is primarily the aromatic fruit husks that are used as the well-known Sichuan pepper – famous for its warm, citrusy, and slightly numbing taste.

Compared to Zanthoxylum rhetsa and Zanthoxylum nitidum, which are more tropical and heat-demanding, Zanthoxylum simulans is far better suited for cultivation in cooler climates. Its use is similar to that of Zanthoxylum piperitum, but it is generally more robust and vigorous.

Cultivation and requirements

Zanthoxylum simulans thrives best in full sun to light partial shade and prefers:

  • well-drained but nutrient-rich soil
  • moderate watering
  • a sunny and preferably sheltered location

The species is hardy in Denmark and can tolerate temperatures down to about –20 °C once established. It is therefore suitable for planting in the garden and is one of the most reliable pepper trees for Nordic conditions.

The plant tolerates pruning and can be kept as a shrub or shaped into a small tree.

Cultivation from seeds

Seeds of Zanthoxylum simulans often have seed dormancy and germinate best after cold stratification. For best results, we recommend:

  • soaking in lukewarm water for 24 hours
  • 6–8 weeks of cold stratification at approx. 4–5 °C
  • sowing in well-drained soil
  • temperature of 18–22 °C after the cold period

Germination can be uneven and take several weeks. Young plants grow steadily and develop thorns and aromatic leaves early on.

Utility and collector value

Zanthoxylum simulans is grown both as a culinary herb and ornamental plant. The fruit husks are used as Sichuan pepper and provide the characteristic warmth and slightly tingling sensation in the mouth.

For those already growing Zanthoxylum piperitum, Zanthoxylum simulans is an obvious supplement, as it is often hardier and more robust. At the same time, it offers an opportunity to expand one's collection of aromatic pepper trees along with species such as Zanthoxylum armatum, Zanthoxylum rhetsa, Zanthoxylum capense, and Zanthoxylum nitidum, each of which represents different climate zones and flavor profiles.

Zanthoxylum simulans is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants a hardy and useful pepper species that can be grown outdoors in Denmark – a robust and aromatic tree with both culinary and botanical value. 🌿
