Dracunculus vulgaris is a spectacular and exotic tuberous plant from the Mediterranean region, particularly Southern Europe and Turkey. It belongs to the aroid family (Araceae) – the same family as Amorphophallus – and is known for its dramatic flowering and unique appearance.
This plant is an obvious choice for collectors and garden owners who want an unusual and eye-catching ornamental plant with a tropical touch.
Appearance and flowering
Dracunculus vulgaris produces an impressive inflorescence consisting of a dark purple to almost black spathe, which surrounds a long, dark spadix. The flower can be up to 40–50 cm long and emits a strong, short-lived scent of carrion to attract pollinating insects.
After flowering, the characteristic, deeply lobed leaves develop on a mottled stem with a snake-like pattern – hence the name dragon lily. The plant can reach a height of 80–150 cm under good conditions.
Difference from Amorphophallus
Although Dracunculus vulgaris resembles Amorphophallus in its floral structure, it is generally more hardy in European climates. It can overwinter in the ground in mild areas and does not require quite as tropical conditions as many Amorphophallus species.
Cultivation and care
- Light: Thrives in partial shade to full sun.
- Temperature: Tolerates light frost, especially in well-drained soil.
- Soil: Well-drained, humus-rich, and preferably slightly calcareous soil.
- Watering: Moderate watering during the growing season – avoid waterlogging.
- Overwintering: Can overwinter in the ground in mild climates. In cold areas, lifting and dry storage at 5–10 °C is recommended.
Use in the garden
Dracunculus vulgaris is ideal for exotic gardens, woodland beds, and larger pots. It creates a dramatic and almost Jurassic appearance and serves as a strong focal point in the spring and early summer garden.
Dracunculus vulgaris is a rare and fascinating tuberous plant for those who want something truly special in their garden – a dramatic bloom, exotic look, and robust growth all in one plant.
