- Latin name: Drosera capensis "alba"
- Danish names: Soldug
- English names: Sundew, Cape sundew
Drosera capensis ‘Alba’ is a beautiful and bright variety of the classic South African sundew. Where the normal Drosera capensis has reddish tentacles and pink flowers, ‘Alba’ is characterized by its pure white flowers and its green leaves with clear, colorless sticky droplets. It appears more delicate in its colors, but has the exact same effective insect-trapping ability as the species.
The leaves are narrow, long, and slightly curved, covered in hundreds of glandular hairs that secrete glistening droplets. Insects are attracted by the shine of the droplets, become stuck, and are gradually enveloped as the leaf slowly curls and surrounds the prey to digest it.
Cultivation and requirements:
Drosera capensis ‘Alba’ is one of the most beginner-friendly carnivorous plants and thrives both on the windowsill and in terrariums. It requires:
In terms of temperature, it is flexible and tolerates 10–30 °C. It grows year-round if kept frost-free and in a bright location.
Cultivation from seed:
The seeds are very small and are sown on top of moist sphagnum moss, without being covered. They typically germinate after 2–5 weeks at 20–28 °C and high humidity. Even small seedlings quickly form trapping droplets and begin to capture microscopic insects.
Concluding remark:
Drosera capensis ‘Alba’ is an easy and exciting carnivorous plant that stands out due to its pure white flowers and clean green foliage. An obvious choice for both beginners and collectors who want a variety with a lighter and more elegant appearance than the classic form.
- The seeds are quite small, but germinate readily.
