TOLERATES MILD FROST
- Latin name: Phoenix sylvestris

Danish names: Silver date palm

English names: Silver date palm, Indian date, sugar date palm, wild date palm
Phoenix sylvestris is a beautiful and robust palm native to the Indian subcontinent, where it grows naturally in forests, fields, and urban areas. It is closely related to the common date palm (Phoenix dactylifera), but distinguishes itself with its silvery-grey foliage and more slender growth habit. With its elegant crown and decorative trunk, it is a favored choice in parks, gardens, and collections of exotic plants.
In the wild, the palm can reach heights of 10–15 meters, and its trunk is covered with characteristic leaf scars that give it a rustic and tropical look. The feathery leaves grow 2–4 meters long and have a cool silver-green sheen that glistens in the sun.
Cultivation and requirements:
Phoenix sylvestris thrives best in full sun and well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established, but grows fastest with regular watering during the growing season.
As one of the hardier palms, it can tolerate short periods of frost down to about -5 °C, making it suitable for cultivation in large pots that can be moved to shelter or kept in a frost-free environment during winter. In Denmark, it should be overwintered indoors or in a greenhouse, but it can easily spend the summer months outdoors, where it provides a distinctive tropical touch.
Cultivation from seed:
The seeds are relatively large and germinate fairly easily. Soak them in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours before sowing, and then sow them in an airy, well-drained soil mixture (e.g., sand, coco coir, and perlite). Keep moist and at 22–28 °C. Germination can take 4–10 weeks. The seedlings quickly form their first narrow leaves, which later develop into characteristic feathery fronds.
Utility:
In its homeland, Phoenix sylvestris has both ornamental and practical value. The sap is traditionally tapped to produce sugar and wine (toddy), and the leaves are used for weaving and roofing material. As an ornamental palm, it is grown worldwide today for its combination of robustness and beauty.
Phoenix sylvestris is the obvious choice for those who want an elegant and easy-to-grow palm that can handle a bit more than many other species – a perfect combination of ornamental value and strength. See also our entire collection of palm seeds for other exciting species.
