Tolerates light frost

  • Latin name: Aloe microstigma
  • Danish names: Spættet Cape aloe, rød Cape aloe
  • English names: Small-spotted aloe, Red Cape Aloe, speckled cape aloe

Aloe microstigma is a compact but robust aloe species native to South Africa, where it grows in both dry bushveld and on rocky mountain slopes. This species is known for its beautiful color shifts, its hardiness, and its decorative, rosette-forming growth, making it one of the most versatile and attractive species for both collections and gardening.

The leaves are thick, upright to slightly curved, and often blue-green with reddish tones that become more intense under stress – such as drought or cold. They are covered with small, light-colored dots (hence the name microstigma, "small spots") and have characteristic orange to reddish-brown thorns along the margins. When the plant receives plenty of sun, the entire rosette can take on a copper-red or purple hue.

In the winter months, Aloe microstigma sends up one or more slender flower stalks bearing dense clusters of tubular flowers in beautiful shades of yellow, orange, and red – often with color gradients from top to bottom. The flowers attract pollinating birds and insects, adding life and color to the cooler season.

The plant thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy soil. It is extremely drought-tolerant and can withstand light frost, typically down to around -5 °C, if kept dry during winter. It is suitable for cultivation in rock gardens, alpine beds, and large pots, where its shape and colors are shown to their best advantage.

Utility:
Although Aloe microstigma is not known for extensive medicinal use like Aloe vera or Aloe ferox, it is used locally in South Africa in folk medicine, particularly as a soothing remedy for skin irritations. Its primary value, however, lies in its high ornamental appeal and robustness in dry gardens and succulent collections.

Aloe microstigma is an excellent plant for those who want a color-changing, compact, and beautifully flowering aloe that tolerates sun, drought, and light frost. It combines strength with beauty – a true gem in any succulent collection.
