Sphagnum or sphagnum moss is incredibly versatile and is excellently suited for many purposes. Use it as a medium for hydroponics, mix it into your orchid soil, use it in a terrarium, or make a kokedama ball with it. Personally, we use it for some of our carnivorous plants and to germinate some of the more demanding exotic plant seeds we have. We also always keep a corner with just moist sphagnum moss in our boxes and terrariums for insects.
Tip: Living Sphagnum
If you would like to have living sphagnum, it is incredibly easy to achieve with this sphagnum moss. Place the moss in water and squeeze it slightly so that it absorbs plenty of liquid. Then squeeze out most of the water and place the moss in a transparent plastic container. You can poke a few holes in the top of the plastic container and place it in a bright spot. Soon, the living sphagnum moss will begin to sprout and grow.
Note: You may find that the bag of sphagnum is dry. In this case, you can advantageously rehydrate the moss (soak it in water and squeeze it slightly) before use.
Why choose our sphagnum?
- Ready to use
- Long-fibered (5-15 cm)
- Good water absorption and aeration
- Locally and sustainably harvested
Is sphagnum sustainable?
Sphagnum moss is not the best resource to harvest. This is due, among other things, to the fact that harvesting it releases a fair amount of CO2. However, this sphagnum moss comes from a local farm in the Netherlands, where only the top part is harvested and where the regeneration of new moss is the highest priority.
