  • Latin name: Pancratium maritimum
  • Danish names: Strandlilje, middelhavslilje, sandlilje
  • English names: Sea daffodil, sand lily, lily of the dunes

Pancratium maritimum is one of the Mediterranean's most iconic and beloved summer flowers – a true sea daffodil that grows directly in the sand along the coasts of Spain, Italy, Greece, Israel, and North Africa. Despite the harsh conditions, it produces large, snow-white, star-shaped flowers that emit a light and sweet fragrance, especially in the evening hours.

The leaves are long, blue-green, and sword-shaped, giving the plant an elegant, almost sculptural appearance. Beneath the surface, it hides a robust bulb that allows it to survive both drought and salt exposure. The pure white flowers resemble a cross between a daffodil and a spider lily, with fine filaments and a prominent trumpet – a true jewel of the arid landscape.

Cultivation and requirements:

Pancratium maritimum thrives in full sun and requires very well-drained, sandy, or gritty soil – the drier and sandier, the better. It is naturally adapted to extreme drought, salty winds, and hot summers, but is surprisingly cold-tolerant during its dormant period.

The species can tolerate light frost down to approximately –5 °C, but in Denmark, it is recommended to grow it in a pot so that the bulbs can be overwintered indoors in dry, frost-free conditions. In the summer, it thrives exceptionally well outdoors in full sun, where it typically blooms in late summer.

Watering should be done sparingly, especially outside the growing season. Excessive moisture is the greatest risk.

Cultivation from seed:

The seeds are relatively large and should be sown in pure sandy soil or a very well-drained sowing substrate. They should only be covered lightly with sand or grit. Keep the soil slightly moist and warm (20–25 °C). Germination can be slow and may take several weeks to months.

Seedlings grow slowly but steadily, gradually developing small bulbs that increase in size year by year.

Utility:

The sea daffodil is widely used as an ornamental plant in Mediterranean gardens, sand beds, pots, and drought-tolerant plantings. It attracts pollinators, is extremely easy to maintain, and provides a clean, elegant, and almost tropical look with minimal care.

Furthermore, it is a symbolically important coastal plant community in the Mediterranean and is used in natural garden projects focusing on drought-tolerant species.

Pancratium maritimum is the perfect choice for anyone who loves the Mediterranean atmosphere and desires an exclusive, fragrant, and ultra-sand-loving plant that thrives where others give up. 🌞🌿🌊

Seed germination

Place the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in clean sandy soil or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place them between damp paper towels, which are then placed in a plastic bag and kept in a bright location. They can take a long time to germinate. Flowers after 2-3 years.
