- Latin name: Strelitzia nicolai
- Danish names: Giant bird of paradise, white bird of paradise
- English names: Giant white bird of paradise, wild banana
Strelitzia nicolai is the largest and most impressive of all bird of paradise flowers. The species originates from the coastal regions of South Africa, where it grows as a small tree in forests and along rivers. With its enormous, banana-like leaves and sturdy trunks, it creates an almost tropical jungle look that few other plants can match.
In the wild, Strelitzia nicolai can reach up to 10–12 meters in height, while in a pot or conservatory it typically remains significantly smaller. Over time, the plant forms multiple trunks from the base and develops an impressive, broad growth habit.
The flowers are large and exotic with white petals and dark blue details. They resemble the flowers of Strelitzia alba, but Strelitzia nicolai often develops more trunks and a more vigorous, tufted growth habit. Compared to Strelitzia reginae, the flowers are larger but less brightly colored, while the plant as a whole becomes many times larger.
Where Strelitzia juncea impresses with its elegant, rush-like leaves, and Strelitzia parvifolia is a rare collector's species with a slender growth habit, Strelitzia nicolai is primarily known for its size and its ability to create a tropical atmosphere.

Cultivation and requirements
Strelitzia nicolai thrives best in full sun to light shade and prefers:
- Well-drained and nutrient-rich soil (we recommend our Calathea & Maranta soil)
- Regular watering during the growing season
- Good humidity
- Warm and bright conditions
A well-drained Mediterranean or tropical potting soil is ideal for cultivation. For optimal growth, you can advantageously use an organic fertilizer throughout the growing season.
The species can tolerate brief, light frost, but in Denmark, it is best grown as a potted plant, greenhouse plant, or conservatory plant. During winter, it should be kept in a bright and frost-free location.
Due to the plant's vigorous growth and large leaves, ample space should be allocated if you wish to grow it to its mature size.
Growing from seed
Strelitzia nicolai seeds germinate best under warm conditions. For the best results, we recommend:
- First remove the orange "tuft"
- Soak in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours
- Sow in a well-drained soil mix
- Temperature of 22–28 °C
- Keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet
Germination typically occurs within 4–12 weeks, but some seeds may take longer. The young plants gradually develop their characteristic broad leaves and eventually acquire their familiar tropical appearance.
As with other bird of paradise flowers, patience is required to grow the plant to a flowering-capable size, but the reward is one of the most spectacular tropical plants you can grow.
Utility and collector value
Strelitzia nicolai is primarily grown as an ornamental and collector's plant. Its enormous leaves and majestic growth make it one of the most impressive plants that can be grown in conservatories and large greenhouses.
For collectors of exotic plants, the species represents a unique opportunity to create an almost tropical forest atmosphere with a single plant.
Even without flowers, the plant is a striking focal point, and many grow it solely for its architectural growth and impressive size.
Strelitzia nicolai is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow one of the world's most impressive bird of paradise flowers from scratch – a majestic plant with huge leaves, exotic flowers, and high collector value.
